Ammonites were marine invertebrate animals from the Jurassic Period. They were protected by a coiled shell formed by chambers. Ammonites ranged from approximately 1 inch and smaller to about 9 feet in diameter. During the fossilasation process the chambers are replaced by pyrite or other crystals, depending on their geographical location and soil properties. Careful cutting and polishing produces the specimens used in jewellery today.
